I tend to go to parks to read, and I've been approached a few times by large (Canadian I think) geese, sometimes in large packs. So far they have only shown mild interest in me, but they have gotten very close, and I am wondering how best to react in this situation?

If you don't do anything to make them feel threatened they will ignore you. If you have food they will try to steal it from you, but they will not try to hurt you. Just enjoy their beauty.

Just throw your hand in the air and shout and they will go away--never make noises like a loaf of bread or they will smack you up. Just kidding, they are taking over all the parks and areas everywhere and leave masses of you know what behind, I would worry more about the poo than being pinched by a goose and they do a pinch bite if cornered.

They are expecting food if you don't have any they will go away. Don't feed wild animals it is really unhealthy and prevents them from eating a healthy diet. If you are frightened by them get a squirt bottle that makes noise (they have some that bark) then spray the goose closest to you and the combo sound squirt will scare them away without harming them. Good Luck!

If they are not acting aggressively, which sometimes they do in the spring because of nesting, just wait and they will wander away. They are most likey grazing. Geese eat alot of grass.

Chances are they are expecting a hand out. Don't feed them anything, just calmly walk away. If they are not getting to close just ignore them and co-exist.

If one ever goes after you, just stand your ground. Its only a goose, they can't really hurt you.
