Just curious as to what the offspring would look like, would it be a selection of dumbo and standard babies? Am quite interested although I realise it's an odd question!

If the standard carries dumbo genes, then you will get some dumbos and some standard.... if it does not, then you'd have all standard who could one day produce dumbos.
as for what they'll look like? well cute of course!! :-D

Actually, "dumbo" ears is just a recessive trait in rats, like blue eyes in humans. If a blue eyed person has kids with a person of a different eye color, chances are the offspring won't end up as some weird hybrid. That's because the parents were, despite their difference in traits, both human.

A dumbo rat IS a fancy rat. By mating a dumbo and a standard-ear rat you wouldn't be crossbreeding anything. Some of the rittens may end up with dumbo ears depending on whether the standard parent has a dumbo trait, and if he/she doesn't, you'll just end up with a bunch of standard rats with the potential to have dumbo offspring.

Fancy rat is just a name petstores call rats with color other then pure white. Chances are UNLESS the Mother carries dumbo ears you are going to get all standard ear babies that carry dumbo ear. Dumbo is a rescessive gene. FYI breeding and raiseing rats without a known background is not a good idea. Shaz

You will end up with more standard rats than Dumbos. Dumbos used to be popular here at one time but I haven't seen one in years on a buyer's pet list. Their temperament is the same as the standard rat. Have you ever had a curly haired rat? I occasionally have one of them. The hair is wavy when the rat is a pup but not so much so as an adult. My favorite is the hairless rat which doesn't produce nearly the odor but the mothers eat most of the young.

you will probably get the standard ears with them being carriers for the dumbo gene but you may also get a mixed batch.

You'd most probably get dumcy and fanbo rats in the litter. A weird combination, but hopefully a new era for rats.

Overly bred animals are always inbred, always carrying genetic defects. Whatever you get will be a mix which is likely to correct some of those defects. Good plan. Tell those rats to get it ON.
