I have been stunned over the last couple of days at the number of people asking about weights and exercise. They speak as if they are going to a gym, but seem to have no guidance when they are there. I know some gyms in the USA don't do this, but is this the norm?

A gym SHOULD provide, as part of the membership of the gym, a programme consultation every six weeks as a minimum. A good gym (in my experience) will also provide a fitness assessment to start, plus progress assessments every 6 or 12 weeks. They should show clients how to use all required equipment and how to perform each exercise.

If this isn't happening, you guys need to start demanding it! People power!

Well some gym do it some don't. I live in Canada and the gym I go to, you are allowed 3 free sessions with a trainer. You can make an appointment for whenever you want.
It's not the people who choose but the gym 'people'. Any gym that do provide fitness trainers will have a business over those who don't.

Most of the gyms give you only 2 free sessions with a trainer when you join, but if you want more sessions you have to pay for them.
