I was making frozen squash with butter, pumpkin pie spice, butter, and mandarin oranges and it went totally liquid on me. What the heck did I do wrong?

because the squash was frozen it held the water in it, plus mandarin oranges are mostly liquid, try cooking longer on low heat to evaporate the excess liquid or adding brown sugar to "caramelize" in it. Next time don't add the oranges until the very end

I would say two things. First I believe when you freeze squash it gets mushy. Just like when a tomato is frozen. Second, adding the oranges will make it mushy. There's alot of liquid in citrus fruit. Next time use yams instead of squash.
