Okay, I really don't know why, but my dad wanted to know if chestnuts are edible... Are they?

Yes they are , but not if they are horse chestnuts, otherwise known as conkers.

Sweet chestnuts are - cook them in the oven or microwave
Horse chestnuts (conkers) aren't

in the winter there are vendors selling roast chestnuts from carts in New York. they are roasted over a charcoal fire
