You don't need a passport to TRAVEL on a cruise ship, but if you want to get off at a port that's in another country, you need one.

Through the end of 2007 you can cruise to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada with only a birth cert. and a government issued photo ID (drivers lic.) If the cruise goes to Europe, So. America or other places then yes you will need a passport. After 1/1/08 no matter where the cruise goes you will need a passport. It is strongly recommend that you have a passport now because if something happens you cannot fly back to the US from anywhere without a passport.

It depends on where the ship is sailing...if to the Caribbean then that decision has been delayed for cruise passengers, however other countries for eg in Europe will require a passport. It is far easier, and more convenient for your travel if you obtain a passport. and think.....you can look back and see the stamps and make a memory of all the countries you have been to. To reduce the time, take along with you your itinerary showing your date of travel to the passport office and ask for the express service - this costs a little more

Though we did not need one at the time (Aug/Sept '06 cruise) we DID get a passport, since we were docking in another country we just wanted to make sure we covered our butt's by having a passport instead of just a birth certificate and drivers license.

It is best to call your cruise line or travel agent toget specific info on this. Some cruise lines are requiring a passport even though the regulations do not yet require one.

Not to travel to the Caribbean. This is not required for sea travel until sometime between 1/1/08 and 06/09

As of January 2007, the answer is YES. If you are taking a cruise that leaves the US - you will need a Passport.

We went last February (2006) and was told it then when we checked in.

Good Luck.
