name calling is very prevalent in R&S and it seems to go with the territory but is it really necessary to call people `Retards`
It is very inapropiate when many people suffer from mental retardation and I am sure that there are quite a few members of this forum have family members who suffer from this condition, Christian and Atheist alike.

Sentinel I couldnt agree more. i think that in the end, when they have no other way to insult us with their "intellectual superiority" they go to name calling. it is very sad and disrespectful, it is easier to insult someone when you cant see or hear them, they are hiding behind the screen.

Before becoming a stay at home Mom I worked 15 years in the mental health field specializing with severely developmentally delayed autistic people and I find the term "retard" extremely insulting. I believe that people who use this term have never had anyone in their lives who lived with this condition. They would not get on here and mock a cancer patient or other uncontrolable disease. It is sad the lack of respect shown to this community.
What I see is when someone does not have a real arguement they resort to name calling. Either that or they are showing their lack respect, rudeness and possibly low IQ. The most solid arguements do not resort to the use of slurs. I enjoy a good and sometimes heated arguement, but it can be done with respect. The old saying rings true "We can agree to disagree"
Peace be with you.

I agree. People here should limit their responses to answering and asking questions to request and give knowledge, not hate-bait. If you do not like an answer, give it a thumbs down. That's fair. If you cannot state your position in a question or answer by putting forth a cogent thought without sounding like a bigot or a pompous know-it-all, move on. We all have opinions we will not budge on. Making absolute statements such as "God does not exist" or "You are going to hell" has no place on the human tongue because in either case no human being has that knowledge for sure. Both statements fly in the face of proper humility.

Look at the source of who is doing the name calling. Do they remind you of mature people? Just let it slide. Try not to take offense.

I don't think I've ever called anyone here a retard... ever. I mean, besides the What Should I Do? Retard, but that's the name he gave himself, so it's ok.

I've called Scientology a dangerous, scamming cult... but that's what it is. Is that so bad?
