Does anyone know how I could find out who the surviving family members of either Ernest Courtenay Carter or Lilian Carter are? They were passengers aboard the Titanic who drowned, and I need to know where I can find out who the rest of their family was. Like a family tree or something. Please help!

If it makes a difference, by the way, both were born in London, England, and lived there their entire lives as far as I know.

I love the odd questions! Never would have known that the lists and details exist... including the enclosed biography, where he was born and father's name.

spoke too soon, and didn't include their obituary

1837 online that has been mentioned is now find my past

Ancestry.com and ancestry.co.uk are better in many ways as UK birth marriage and death indexes are free there but you still need to get the certificates from www.gro.gov.uk for the full info. Ancestry also has all UK censuses 1841-1901 and US censuses to 1930.

Leaving the UK on Titanic
CARTER Lilian 44 F 1912 Southampton USA New York
also CARTER Ernest 54 M plus 4 other Carters but no ages (William, L, WT and ?)

I had a look at the 1901 census and Ernest and Lilian had no children living with them. However Lilian's sister May Hughes was living with them, she was unmarried. The 1911 census will be available in the next few years and that should tell you if they had any children then.

Considering the research done on the Titanic, I would not be surprised if there is a book out there that details the families of all the passengers. Ask your college or city librarian for help.
Further, you should be able to build a familty tree back from them using the resources of the geneological records of the Mormons which are available through libraries and online. Then you can follow the families in other directions. Remember, however, that the Titanic sank in 1912 so you are talking several generations.
Of course there is the Encyclopedia Titanica
http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/biography/370/
"His wife was a daughter of Tom Hughes, of Rugby fame. She was a great diocesan worker amongst women."

"Her father was Thomas Hughes, author of 'Tom Brown's Schooldays'"

If you know where Ernest and Lillian lived, you might start with trying to get an obituary from the newspaper in that city or nearest city. It might have survivors.

The Mormon website address is www.familysearch.org you may be able to find out from there. Did you see the list of passengers recently free to view for one week only on the site that used to be called 1837 on-line, cant remember it's new name.

Contact the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City Utah, they have a genealogy list like no other, they can probably help you find any one and tell who they are related to.
