Intellect and intellegence are mutations.. Genes are the carriers of traits.. If a trait say the ability to conceive of and use tools (even the first primate who used a stone to crack open a bit of food was using a tool) gives an individual more chance of survival for a longer period of time that individual has more time to produce more young and pass along that trait.. Over time that trait becomes standard for that species.. Because the ones with the trait are making more young and their young are in turn able to make more.. While the ones without the trait are slowly pushed out because they survive for a shorter amount of time and are not able to produce many young..

Intellegence didn't happen in one giant leap it happened in small incrimental steps, the ability to use tools( a stone a stick or other picked up item put to use) , then came the ability to improve upon the original tool (two stones used in conjunction to improve the result of just one stone) , then maybe adding a stick to the stone to make it even better, and so on..

Those with the trait survived and were able to produce the greatest number of young while those without died off.. As you go those without are left behind as each incremental step is made bringing us from early primate through several stages of evolution to homo sapien over millions of years..

We did not evolve from modern day primates we only share a common ancestor and our evolutionary paths diverged based on traits for survival..

How do we know that we're the only "intellectuals?" That word in itself is nothing but a fuzzy concept. How do we know what other lifeforms are really thinking?

Evolution does not say that we inherited out intelligence. Evolution states that we developed it.
