Long Island is by far the safest, the police on Long Island earn up to $100,000 a year plus. The only problem is that there aren't that many apartments. Long Island is mostly houses. If you are looking for safe places to live with moderate rents, try Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn. Anywhere along the Parkway is safe and the rents are reasonable. Also northeast Queens, Bayside and Little Neck, you have great neighborhoods and reasonable priced apartments.

I found a great 2 bedroom and 2 bath apt in a 3-plex located in Astoria, Queens. I was one half a block from the main street (stores, restuarants and especially Dino's pizza), and only two blocks from the N and W trains into Manhatten. I paid only $1450.00 a month never had a problem.

Either subletting or basement apartment is the cheapest. Living in the 5 boroughs is a matter of adjusting. They all have safe and dangerous neighborhoods, including Long Island.

Renting with roomies is always a hit or miss. You'll love it if your roomies respect your privacy and share your notion of fun (house parties versus coming back to a quiet apartment after a wild night out) Most of the time it is cheaper if you share apartments with roomies not to mention that you get introduced to their social network especially useful when you are looking for dates or a job or general advice etc. Make sure to be frank about your expectations and be sure to ask theirs too (usually around cleaning the apartment or keeping it clean, keeping the noise levels down, not leaving the heater or A.C on when they head out racking up the bill for everyone, hogging the bathroom during morning rush hour etc) In summary : it is great if you are with the right roommates like in all relationships :) Good luck

If you get a place close to the long island rail road, you'll be like a 20 minute train ride into the city. Stay outta the main cty & youll be fine =)

Queens is cheaper and safe. Long Island will take you too long to get to work and if you are single it's hard to meet people there.

I would recommend to you Riverdale, Bronx. Choose the area closest to Jewish community, I bet it's the safest. Good luck...
