I use live minnows such as small shiners , cut bait can be used as well. They like canals and places similiar to largemouth bass. Use heavy line and i reecommend a heavy action rod and reel they are good fighters.

I have caught a few off artificials but live bait is the best, it can be fished under a bobber , or cut bait can be fished on the bottom

I have never targeted a "Mudfish" when going fishing. However, I've caught TONS of them while trying to find Bass. They are considered a "trash fish" in Bass Circles, & they tend to ruin your tackle.

1st./ Find a shallow, (4-6 FT), flats area that is super "muddy" and doesn't get alot of oxygen. (there are many locations such as this all up and down the St. Johns River in FLA). How you can tell if an area is oxygen depleted: look for dying Lily-pads,(and vegetation), and heavily "wooden" structure with a MUDDY bottom. Mudfish can live in ditches, retention ponds, and everywhere else a normal fish COULDN'T. They can take oxygen straight from the "top of the water", SOOO, if you see swirls & fish "breaking water" to gain O2 then it might be 'ole Muddy. Back-woods swamps and Bogs are the Mudfishes favorite haunts. If you are catching lots of "Warmouth", ( a Sunfish/Crappie looking fish), then you are typically on your way to "Mudfish Heaven". (lol)

2nd./ I have ruined more $4 1/2 OZ spinner-baits on Mudfish than I can count. A 6-8 LB Mudfish can EASILY "bend, warp, demolish", any Bass lure it wants too. They especially LOVE top-waters fished SLOWLY in a "Walk the Dog" fashion.

Therefore, I would suggest to you a Spoon in 1/2-3/4 OZ in GOLD. Cost you less than a spinner-bait or Top water. Figure 1-2 fish per lure,(that is how BADLY they tear up a lure!).

I'm sure you could fish with Live shiners on a Jig and get some "action" too. Hook the shiner through the lips and slowly bump it along the bottom.

Remember, Mudfish have super strong "nasty" jaws and can ruin your fishing trip if you get "bit". Be careful when removing hooks/BETTER YET, just cut your line!

FYI: I had a friend who lived in the 'glades. He LOVED Mudfish and would make "Mudfish & Grits". It was actually pretty good. I just don't think I could ever "seek them out" when fishing. I guess I've just never forgave the Muddys for ruining my tackle! (lol)

Good luck, I guess! (lol)
