buy sally hansen cuticle remover. it's a few dollars at walmart or a drug store. rub some lotion or vaseline on your cuticles each night. this will help remove the dead cuticles and keep them soft.

as for the callous on your finger -- i get this too -- buy the cushions that can go on your pencils and pens and try not to squeeze your pencil too tightly. it will go away on it's own once you decrease the stress to that area on your finger.

You can take care of your cuticles at home. Wash your hands in warm soapy water, then apply any type of lotion. Let sit for a minute, then was hands again. Using a cuticle trimmer (available at the drug store) gently push the cuticle back and then trim. Use a moisturizer every day to reduce the callus on your finger from your pencil.

1] get some vitamin E cream or capsules. Apply to cuticles twice a day, and put a little on that callus.
2] bring a tube of unscented moisturizer with you, and always apply it every time you wash your hands.
3] wear protective gloves to do housework, yardwork, etc.
4] after cuticles heal, apply unscented moisturizer or vaseline to nail beds every night
5] if nailbeds become inflammed, red or swollen, use some antibiotic ointment to heal
6] don't pick!
7] use an emery board to file down small calluses after bathing, and moisturize well
8] eat well - lean protein, lean dairy, whole grains, fruits and veggies. Avoid fried, fast, and junk food - even diet junk food
9] drink about 1/2 gallon of water a day
10] take a good multivitamin with minerals every day - sometimes a little bit of one can make a big difference in hair, nails, or skin
*** if these steps don't start to workin 2-3 days, call your doctor - you could have a fungal infection
