To tell you the truth, it doesn't feel much different at first. While in the retreat, you feel this sense of serenity, this sense of peace and quiet. You feel that life suddenly became perfect. But once you leave, you truly understand how far you progressed when you can see the pestilent people that surround you.

I always see a spiritual retreat as a way of 'getting myself back on track.' We can be so easily swayed by the outside influences in this mad, multi media, western world. A retreat helps kick start you back to the realisation of what is important in life.
As for fasting, I first fasted 22 years ago and really found it difficult & punishing. Now I fast for pleasure and again, to get myself back on track. Fasting is like climbing a very rough mountain. Its hard work & sometimes painful, but the rewards at the end are spiritually nourishing.
Try it & see how you feel for yourself. Im sure you will learn & gain something.

It's a very personal experience. The only time I did a retreat while fasting was camping out in Yosemite Valley. It began to resemble an acid trip, a good one.

You never know how you will feel. Sometimes you feel renewed. Sometimes you feel convicted. Hopefully, during a retreat you will learn something. It should be a time spent in prayer and becoming more intimate with God.

I went hiking and got lost in the woods once. I had water but no food with me and it took me all day to find my way back to my tent.
It was very peaceful, but I was starving for a Big Mac by the time I got back to camp.
