Just eat less and do more! To put it simply, that is. I know it's stating the obvious but balance your diet and cut out the unnecessary things. But also in terms of exercise, if the operation hasn't prevented you from swimming then that would be a good option. There will be no pressure on your leg and you can use a float to enable you to swim with arms only.

i was on crutches for 4 months (now i walk with a cane) and i was going outside every day even when it was snowing to have a little walk (i walked at least 5-6 blocks), i also live on the 3rd floor. when i got home i felt more tired than after 3hour work out at the gym.
and i also followed this
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

At the moment you are not burning off what you eat. You simply can't help this, but you can help what you are putting into your mouth. What I am saying is you will have to cut down on calories when you are not getting enough exercise to burn it off. Weight only piles on if you are taking in more than is going out in the form of exercise.

Go for protein as opposed to sugar to keep energy levels going strong rather then crashing. Edamame in pods could be the perfect snack since it takes time to eat and a one-cup serving offers 12 grams of necessary protein.

Eat fruit, nuts, fish and vegetables, and exercise every single day, if you are able to swim even with just your arms, then I suggest swimming. If you are housebound then you simply have to make up your own aerobic workouts like dance, or use a dvd with yoga, aerobics, dance or the like.
If you are unable to exercise a lot then you do have to be rather strict with your diet, but if you are strict it definitely works.

Eat in front of a person rather than a screen. It cuts down on mindless eating and makes you more accountable for each bite.
