As Dr. Albert said. He is pretty much correct. You have a dead tooth since its food supply and nerve supply has been removed. With that, the tooth turns black and becomes brittle. And can break.
We must consider the options though. Root Canals have been shown to cause cancers. The metals and other chemicals used in the USA are not that good over time in the body. The tooth and its chemical mix, makes the body want to reject the tooth. So you loose the tooth in 10 years, if you didn't get cancer by then somewhere in your body. The tooth is dead, and one must consider to have it removed, or treated. In the USA, the cheapest and more a money maker for Dentists, are treated with Root Canals. The process is much easier for the dentists here, and make them alot of money. Instead a more healthier Peroxide treatment is done, that kills any bacteria, and colors the tooth white. This must be done early, As a black tooth means too late. But is not a loss. In Europe where Peroxide treatments are done most, the process is more lengthy to do, and less profitable. But the patient lives much healthier, and longer. You can research the studies on this online. As now we have started to learn of the dangers crowns and fillings in the USA are doing to our bodies. Too late in many cases of us still with this junk in our mouths. And making Dentists rich, rather then concerned overt if you live tomorrow or not. You health, and life comes with a price. It is sad, that our medical world is now in a position to dictate whether you get care and live, or not. Also this seems to exist in the animal world as well. With Veterinarians. So you next cavity I hope you will treat it with Peroxide treatments, and Peroxide Therapy. As I have done.

Root canal is a process of removal of the nerve and other tissues within the tooth. A tooth starts turning black when these tissues are cut off from blood supply and begin to clot. There are two options: one is bleaching (usually internal bleaching wherein the bleaching material is placed within the tooth is advised) and the other one is crown for the tooth. Crown has an advantage of keeping the tooth covered and prevent its breakage. A root canal filled tooth is dead and becomes brittle as time progresses.

Like 23 years ago I hurt my top 4 central teeth in an accident, and I had to have 4 root canals performed. After about 4 years, my teeth started turning gray, which was very unsightly. My dentist explained that this was because the teeth were dead because the root was gone, sort of like a tree. Since I was too young to have replacements (I was only 10 by then), what my dentist did to gain a little bit of time was to remove the materials used to seal the teeth after the root canal and bathe the insides of my teeth with hydrogen peroxide. This whitened them quite a bit, and gained enough time to be able to wait until I was 15 and had replacements. You should check with your dentist if this can be done.
I -do- recommend getting caps or replacements if you can afford it though, because as the others have said, once your teeth start turning gray, they become very fragile and prone to cracks or even completely breaking off (I had 2 teeth crack and 1 completely break off). If you're old enough, and can afford it, you should just have your dentist replace the teeth before they crack, it will save you a lot of problems.

All root canaled teeth usually turn darker due to the filling materials placed in the roots and tooth to fill the space where the nerve used to be and the tooth that had to be removed to perform the root canal. This is one reason a crown is placed after a root canal as well as b/c the tooth is now dead b/c the nerve is gone and the tooth becomes very brittle and breaks easily. When root canaled teeth break they often break down the root requiring extraction.

HELLO JOHN,
THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION THAT AFTER ANY TOOTH HAS HAD A ROOT CANAL THEN THE NUTRIENTS THAT NORMALLY KEEP THE TOOTH LOOKING NORMAL ARE GONE.
SO THEN WHAT HAPPENS?
THE TOOTH BEGINS TO DARKEN AS IT BECOMES BRITTLE IT MAY FRACTURE AT ANY UNEXPECTED TIME. THAT'S WHY IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO PUT A CROWN ON THIS TOOTH TO PREVENT FUTURE DAMAGE. SOME INTERNAL BLEACHING MAY BE DONE TO LIGHTEN THE TOOTH, BUT THIS IS A MOOT POINT BECAUSE THE TOOTH STILL NEEDS TO BE COVERED BY A CROWN TO PROTECT IT.

They always die at some point after the root canal, and they start turning grayish black. You will need a crown or some other dental treatment if you want to change the color.

Root canals, from what I understand, are the result of decay within a given tooth that effect the nerve. In my case, I had a cavity that was really deep and even after I had a filling put in it continued to decay almost all the way to the jaw bone.
The explanation that I got from the dentist is that the nerve of my tooth had died and it needed to be removed as well as the decay and infection inside of my tooth.
Basically what he did was go inside my tooth, take all of the decay out, clean the four canals of my tooth, made a mold of my real tooth and then put a temporary cap back in my tooth. After a couple of weeks the permanent cap arrived in his office and he simply took off the temporary and replaced it with the permanent cap.
As far as the operation itself, I was given a local anestetic and I was awake through the whole thing. I felt no pain at all and I even drove home from the dentist's office.
I've had two root canal operations, one without dental insurance and one with it, and it can be very expensive. When I had it done without insurance the whole procedure, including the permanent cap, cost about $1,300. Believe me it was not fun to have to pay that but you need to have this operation done.
If you wait too long the tooth can become infected, like mine did, and it can spread to other parts of your body and cause serious complications. I waited about two and a half years before I finally had my second root canal done.

Stay away from the professional teeth whitening procedures and from the whitening at home kits. They are using extremely toxic chemicals that can cause IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO TOOTH ENAMEL and premature tooth decay.
Check out this site: http://www.naturalwhiteteeth.net - It's about how you can whiten your teeth 100% naturally. Same results but 100% safe and 1000 times cheaper.
