Skywriting...and yes its expensive!

The price will depend on how complex the symbols or words are, and also the type of aircraft used and how close they are to the location you want your message. Count on a minimum of $1000, and be warned that your smoke message will last only a few minutes before being dispersed in the atmosphere.

Like others have said, it is called sky-writing, and it uses An environmentally-approved, oil-based fluid that is vaporized in the 1,500 degree heat of the exhaust of the aircraft’s engine. Engine heat is used to turn specially treated paraffin oil into white smoke, which is discharged under pressure to create the smoke.
It is temporary and usually has to be done in light winds, otherwise it would all be blown away.
The cost of it really depends on the length of the message to be written.

It's expensive. Basically, a tank of oil is sprayed onto the VERY HOT exaust, and creates smoke. Try it on your car, spray WD-40 on the exaust.

It's called sky-writing, and it's about $500, I think.
