I'm starting a degree in dental hygiene and therapy in september. Has anyone recently finished this or a similar course and have any books to sell? Or know where to get them cheaper? I've tried amazon and the like...Any help appreciated. Thanks

congratulations on getting a place on a course- that's your biggest hurdle crossed. Well done.

I qualified 16 years ago, but recommend you consider obtaining the following, which I have purchased recently. You may not find all the information you want in them and please bare in mind that they are American based.

recommend following books:
Clinical Practice of the Dental hygienist.
Author Esther M. Wilkins
publisher Lippincottwilliams and Wilkins
ISBN 0-7817-4o90-8
(try LWW.com) ...is listed on cover of book

it has a companion book that is absolutely brilliant. It tests your understanding of each chapter and gives you spaces to write notes. (if you fill it in in pencil, you can go back over it again for revision) Again its based on practicing in America, but it is still a fantastic book. Is great for revision.
ISBN 0-7817-4091-6
Student Workbook for Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist.
Authors Charlotte Wyche and Esther M. Wilkins
(same publisher)
I bought the books at a symposium and it was £50 for two(special offer)

Also recommend the following as I attended a two day course learning further techniques for blocks and infiltrations. The tutor for the course has produced a book and a DVD. it covers the anatomy you'll need to know and shows you techniques of how to administer them. The techniques shown may not be exactly the same as you'll learn in training, but they will be invaluable for the anatomy.
I bought mine from : Septodont. Tel 01622 695520 was £50

Enjoy your taraining and welcome to the profession.

Well done you, hope it goes well for you, I'm so envious, I'm a dental nurse and would love to do the hygiene course but dont have the get up and go to actually do it!
Why dont you try getting in contact with Kings College dental Hospital? they do the hygiene course there and may be able to offer some sort of library service.
If not Waterstones book shop are pretty good for stocking these kind of books, if not there is a web site for dental hygienists, not to sure what the actual name is, maybe somebody on there will be willing to help you out!
Well done again and good luck with the book search and your studies!

I can only tell you this... I have a masters in architecture and a bachelors in structural engineering. When I was in college. I was advised by my tutors to go on and complete a Phd in architecture. Luckily, I took advice from a friend who was already working as an architect. He told me that a Phd would price me out of the workplace market as they didn't need Phd's to do the work. I would be over qualified for anything other than going back to college and working in academia as a teacher or researcher. I now work as a valued structural engineer, not least because I have the architectural background to be trusted by my employers. It is better to 'price' yourself into the market for your work, and also get additional qualifications that provide you with additional knowledge to do your work better. 'Degrees' are meaningless if all they do is look good on your 'cv'. Employers want valuable employees who can do the job better that those of their competitors. That's it.
