i have an expander that widens my jaw on the top. last night when i turned it i turned it twice instead of once because the key caught stuck and i couldn't get it out. when i woke up this morning my whole face hurts nose, mouth, eyes, jaws, chin, and cheeks. are they supposed to hurt?

In this case, YES! Don't expand it tonight because you already used two turns last time.
Take some motrin - not on an empty stomach. If you weigh less than 150pounds, take 400 mg. [ two of 200 mg. tablets ]
If you are over 150, you might need 600 mg. [ three of 200 tabs ]
Try ice on and off for 20 min at a time until you get some relief
[ ice or frozen veggies in a plastic bag, covered with a dishtowel, applied to jaw. If you put the veggies in a ziploc bag, you can refreeze them, and people can tell not to eat them ]
Your face 'thinks' it suffered a trauma, because everything shifted so much, and it responds with pain. Sounds like your
expander is working extremely well.

My son had an expander and yes you can feel pain in your face from too many turns. Try an Ibuprfen/ tylenol arthritis for the pain, it should only last a day or so, don't turn until pain is gone and let your Ortho know...

because you turned the expander twice instead of the usual once, your jaw and the rest of your head could just be trying to adjust to the new placement.
