I have a rottwailer that is 9wks old , is it too late to
have it's side nails cut permanently, as it just hangs
when the dog is grown, and when is the longest
time I can wait.

If you're talking about the dew claws, the breeder didn't remove them when the puppy was a day or two old. Now it requires surgery, so talk to your vet.

My vet recommended doing it at the same time as he was neutered. That really helped since he only had to be put under once--and only had 1 surgery to recover from. It is also a good deal cheaper at that point since you don't have the additional costs of a vet visit, and anesthesia.

It really is never too late to remove them but it is easier the younger they are. Also it really depends on your dog. Yes it is painful if the dog snags it but some dogs have really developed dew claws that are just like regular claws. My sisters Jack Russel mix has its dew claw that is just as big as its regular claws and it will never get yanked out, but some dogs have a very small, thin, loosely attached dew claw. Those need to be removed b/c if it wiggles a lot and is loose, it is more likely to get yanked out at some point.

Your vet can remove them, but if your talking about the dew claws on the front legs they should be fine left alone. You just trim them like the other nails. Now if your dog has them on the rear legs, you may want to have them removed, those can get caught on things and be ripped off, it's not pretty. So call your vet and see what they advise you to do. Take care.

You don't really need to have the dew claws removed. Talk to your vet, if you are really intent on having this done. The dog would need to be put under anethesia at this point to have it done. I would just keep the dew claws clipped when you clip his other nails.

Since he is just nine weeks old I would have it done now before he gets any older. It is a very painful and stress full operation for a older dog. I had my Border Collie's done last year { 2 yrs } and she had a lot of pain even with meds I was giving her. They can't walk on their paws for a long time.
Now is good time for you to have it done.

Call your vet and ask what they recomend. Normally it's not really to late. Although you'll need surgery to do it. It should be preformed ONLY by a vet specialized in that kinda stuff.

you can get it done at any age ..sooner the better. And for the people that think its mean to cut the dewclaws off..youve never had to deal with a torn off dew claw after rough play..its best to take them..especially on a rotti because they play so rough

maximum dogs are smooth to human beings holding or dealing with their paws. you want to desensitize them to paw dealing with by technique of pairing the approach with foodstuff. First get her to lie on her aspect, and take care of. allow her scent the clipper and take care of. contact and carry one paw and take care of. save repeating until eventually she is smooth with you touching and holding paws. Then in simple terms clip one nail, take care of, and end the consultation. this may help re-affiliate the nail slicing procedure with helpful yummy foodstuff. I fairly propose utilising a nail grinder. i exploit the Dremel Minimite cordless grinder. The cordless area is rather useful because i will grind everywhere, and my dogs are not getting tempted to chew on the cord. I make my dogs lie on their aspect, then I do fairly grinding, then they get mackerel and repeat. start up with in simple terms doing one nail at each consultation and also you may want to slowly develop the dimensions of the classes as your dogs receives better smooth with it. i love grinding because you're taking the nail down slowly, and there is little danger of hitting the fast, compared to nail trimming. you are able to also structure the nail better perfect with a grinder. on the down aspect, it is going to take you longer to get your dogs's nails performed. you even ought to make confident you do not artwork for too lengthy on one nail because too a lot warmth might want to get generated and it may get uncomfortable on your dogs.
