Bluefish are hyper aggressive and will feed on any smaller fish. To catch them from the surf, it's best to cut bait, bunker, mackerel, herring, even shad. Also you could use spearing, shiners. In the surf, it's not uncommon to catch bluefish in as shallow water as three feet. The come in real close to the shoreline to trap and feed on the baitfish. If you are using lures, any shiny lures such as hopkins, castmaster, crocodile works on both on the jetty and in the surf. The best way to catch bluefish is to toss out a line with baited hooked with fish pieces or use a shiny lure. If they are in the neighborhood, they will go for it. Usually you can tell when the bluefish are around by the sight of seagulls and terns flocking over the water and diving for baitfish. If you see that, chances are there are bluefish pushing up to baitfish to the surface and in a tight ball, then feasting on them.

Bluefish are fast and aggressive and you should use this to your advantage. A 1oz silver spoon fished with a fast retrieve has all ways worked well for me. Got-Cha Plugs are also excellent baits. As for live bait, mullet works great here in Florida and I am told that bunker is the bait of choice in the Mid Atlantic states. Tide is much more important then time of day for blues. Two hours before a tide change, to one hour after the slack tide are the most productive times. Bluefish have kept anglers busy this year. Bluefish are agressive. They will eat almost anything. I like using cut bait such as spot or bunker. They always go after this. While fishing in the surf, try to let the fish swim with the waves so they dont get slashed around in the surf. Also try using leaders

Blue fish do all the things described above, except that they are "weird", I was in the middle of a "BLITZ" ( man I'm talking a major "BLITZ" they (Blue fish) moved a HUGE school of bunker into the back Bay from the Inlet, the school of Bunker was so huge, it looked like an Island moving under the boat, then all Hell broke lose), I was "Fluking", I had no Lures, I quickly cut up a clam belly, and put a forked piece of Squid on there for action, I dropped her down into the Blitz, and reeled up fast several times, I could see the Bluefish chasing the clam belly BUT, THEY WOULDN'T STRIKE ! while the guy next to me nets a 20 lb "CHOPPER", man was I pissed !

Bluefish are the terror of bait fish. They will slash and kill ,Mame and eat any bait fish in its path. As whole schools do this, the water explodes in a fury of mayhem. Blues hate red. The color red drives them crazy. The color of blood. Use any spoon- plug bottom rig, as long as it has some red on it and if the blues are around you will catch some.

I fish for blues each and every of the time. I continually use cut back mackerel. I even have caught them interior the 20lb as much as 30lbs selection. I continually fish at night. some say the tides make a brilliant distinction, yet I continually look to seize them no remember what the tide is. the suited bait so you might use is sand ells in case you will hit upon them. in case you be waiting to get a good length or any length, keep your arms faraway from his mouth or you will no longer have any arms. good success.
