For my students I've always recommended learning first on an acoustic guitar because of required chords, rhythm practices, and projection. While playing an electric guitar is easier on the fingertips, it can cause a wake-up call when the student plays an acoustic--thus learning for the first time the necessity of strength in the hand for chord formations and how tender your fingertips may still be from playing electrics.

Alvarez's acoustics are fine, quality instruments ranging from $200 to $500.

any age is a good age, but starting so late will give you a little bit of a disadvantage, but still go for it. Go to a guitar center or some kind of guitar store and look around, since most 200-300 dollar guitars are generally not to different in quality (unless you find a really good one on sale for that price), then it just depends on what you want

Anytime is a good time to start learning something. Sir Robert Helpmann didn't take his first ballet lesson until he was 21, and went on to become one of the top dancer-choreographers of his time. (You can see him in the film 'The Red Shoes'.)

About 20 years ago, a 'Live from the Met' broadcast of the opera 'Turandot' featured the professional singing debut of a tenor in the role of the Emperor. The gentleman was *85* years old at the time...

Go for it!

(Sorry, don't know anything about electric guitars...)

I know nothing of guitar prices, but anyone can learn any instrument at any time of their life, GO FOR IT! Even if you are 80 years old you can learn to do anything you put your mind to. LORI O^O
