This has been on my mind for some time...

So let's say the U.S. were to have another civil war:

1. Battlefield: USA
2. Time Frame: Today
3. Teams: like i said Navy Marines vs. Army & Air Force

(to answer please put aside all feelings, for example: do not post Semper Fi! just because you were an ex-marine and then dont give me an explanation...haha)

In a conventional war the Army and Air Forfce would win because they have greater numbers and firepower. In a tactical war the Navy and Marines could use their Trident submarines to launch nuclear missiles and do some heavy damage.

The Army and Air Force would win easy.

The Marines and Navy are great but 500,000 of them vs 1,000,000 or so would be too much. Plus the Army and Air Force would have a lot more planes for air strikes and wouldn't have to put as many people directly into the fight. The Navy wouldn't be able to put as many people on the ground either. And when it came to ground combat the Army has a lot more personnel in infantry which would help out greatly, plus the Army and Air Force combined have more SOF units than the Navy and Marine Corps.

I think the Marines and Air Force vs Army and Navy would be a closer hypothetical situation.

EDIT: cmortality-since when does "not giving a ****" win wars? I never knew that they didn't teach the Army and Air Force to kill. What do Rangers do anyways?

Army/Air force the reason the Navy is limited to where they can attack so the marines will have to do all of the attacking. The Air force has better pilots so the Navy will be sitting ducks. The Marines are better at combat than the Army. However, the Army has tank divisions which will give the marines more than they can handle.

The US has enough land based air to neutralize the mobility of the carrier platforms. The Army is larger and better equipped for long distance ground combat. So I would have to pick the Army and Air Force with the following constraints

1. Combat is limited to the lower 48
2. No one uses nukes

Such a war I might note would be like the last one - very hard on the civilians.

Navy / Marines. The Army and Air Force may outnumber the Navy and the Marines, but the N/M have the most elite training. Basically, the N/M don't give a s*** about who they are killing. They are trained to kill, bottom line. It's not about numbers. Many battles have been won by the underdog just because they had more spirit and will.

Army'Air Force would crush them. Not only are the Army's special forces every bit as tough as the Marines but when you add air power and higher brainpower, the Marines are totally overwhelmed
