A small concrete bollard in my street was recently removed and the sign it carried was put up on a nearby lampost. The sign is roughly square yellow with a black 'H' on it with some black numbers above and below the H itself.
I've seen these signs around for years but i'm curious as to what they are for.
Any ideas?

They designate where the nearest water hydrants are for use by the Fire Brigade.

I vaguely remember it's something to do with a water pipe. I think the 'H' stands for 'Hydrant' or H2O. And the numbers relate to how far the sign is from the water.
Have a look next time you're by the sign, and I'm pretty sure you'll find a cover in the pavement somewhere, and beneath this cover is a water pipe. I'm not recommending you remove the cover though!!
Maybe someone out there can elaborate on this...? Or maybe tell me I'm completely wrong!

It is to indicate to the fire brigade that a water hydrant is nearby. The top number is the diameter of the available water outlet pipe and the lower number indicates the distance from the sign to the pipe location.
The letters E.W.S are sometimes also shown meaning; emergency water supply.

I my California we have a blue bots dot placed off center of the middle of the road..it is opposite the fire hydrant.___.__
and on the same side as the hydrant, glows in the dark and the firemen know exactly where the fire hydrant is . I have never seen the sign you are describing.
