Give him back to his mother and littermates for at least another month. That's where he learns socialization.

This puppy is way to early to train. They have the attention span of a pea at 4 weeks. Let this puppy grow up some and learn how to be a dog with his littermates and mother. You would not expect nor teach a newborn child to learn to read with out first learning the ABC's.
Leave the puppy alone for a few more weeks and then work on one command at a time. Sit is an easy one! One month old though is to young for even that.

You can start as soon as he is weaned and eating solid food. Right now its all about being with mom so don't interfere too much.German Shepherds are quick learners and you can start at about 6-8 weeks, but make it a game so the pup will enjoy it. One other thing make the training periods short about 5-6 minutes at the start as pups attention spans are about that duration. Have fun and if you need any more help just shoot me an e-mail.

Check out this website:

The Monks of New Skete raise German Shephards and are excellent dog trainers and behavioralists. If you can, get their book - The Art of Raising A Puppy. Most bookstores carry this book or you can order it online - ask your parents if you are under 18.

They will take you from the birth of the pup, up through adulthood and help prepare you to be a good dog owner.

Good luck!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL44j

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

He should still be with the mother and litter mates. Dogs need to be taken from mom at about 6 weeks or when she is no longer producing milk and stay with litter mates until either 7 or 10 weeks of age to learn appropriate play such as biting. Training after that can start as early as you feel he is ready but make them short sessions at first-no more than 5-10 minutes long as puppies have a very short attention span.

i hope you mean that he has been with you for 1 month?! a puppy should never leave its mother before 8 weeks. it can cause serious behavioral problems later on in life. 2-3 months you can start teaching your puppy at home simple basics with minor obsession over it. just a little here and there. and always use positive reinforcement training

The sooner the better as he is small I would leave fetch for another month yet sit stay and come would be fine. I can not stress enough the necessity to teach the come comand. As a veterinary nurse I see to many dogs come in with broken legs or having to be put down due to running after a car.

Teach in the order of Sit, Stay and come. Remember when teaching stay comand do not teach you dog to come to you after you release the command you must come to him as when he is older and relaxed with his comands he may be live it is appropriate to come to you when danger such as a car is going past. German Shepard's are very smart and loyal dogs you will find he will instill al his trust in you and re lie on your training and judgement before his own concerns.

I wish you luck, and recommend the sit stay fetch program available free to your yahoo mail by singing up as a member at no cost on the web site dedicated to proper and effective dog training, just type sit, stay, fetch into a search engine.

You should not take any pup from his Mom sooner than 8 weeks as it leads to training and dog fighting problems. When I bought my male German Shepherd at 8 weeks I started his obed. training and he was being shown at 4 mos and started his title at 6 mos and 1 day. You can try a breeder trick of putting Bitter Apple on your hands and shoes and letting him learn hands and feet taste nasty. At that age he would have to chew on stuff more as he isn't weaned but he can learn stuff tastes bad. Puppies learn the world thru their mouths.

he wont stop biting b cause he wants to latch on and drink milk. was there a good reason that he was removed from the litter this early? The only good explanation you should have to remove a pup that young is the rest of the litter is not letting him get enough milk. He needs to be bottled feed and checked at a vet to make sure you are giving him the right food he needs at that age.his training should start at 8-10wks. House training is easy if you take them out at the same time everyday. Don't leave the water bowl out all day. let him drink them take him out with in min. of him finishing his water. When you take him out put him on a leash to get him used to it. At that age I wouldn't want him out b cause of disease at that age he can catch. Be careful with a dog that young and make sure you limit other dogs around him they could make him sick.

It's never to early or to late to start (once they are 8weeks)! Get it a bully stick and when it bites you say NO, then give them chew stick.. it will learn fast, that breed is very smart ! start with sit, then stay, then down etc... my dog knew sit at 12 weeks, oh and by the way 4 weeks is way to young, as you shouldn't even have this pup until 8weeks at the min.. whom ever set u up with this new pup is WAY LAME. Good luck!
