In context:
"Esta es una isla que demora al este de Tancaj por sotavento, paralela a la costa en el tramo que corre de la Maroma a Acumal, a la distancia de veinte millas del continente. Su longitud no está fijada, más ésta no puede bajar de 36 millas y su latitud media de 10. En una ensenada de su parte occidental sefundó en noviembre de 1849 elpueblo de San Miguel".

I have translated it roughly to:
"This is an island that waits(demora) leeward, to the east of Tancaj, it compares to the section of coast that runs along the Maroma a Acumal (Rope to Acumal), at the distance of twenty miles of the continent. Its longitud is not fixed, but it cannot be below 36 miles and its average latitude is 10. In a cove in its western part the town of San Miguel sefundó (melted or burned) in November of 1849."

Just a mistake in "no puede bajar"= it cannot be less than
( it cannot be more than="no puede ser mas"

"latitud" = latitude
"longitud"=lenght

So it's OK

Regarding the additonal details:

"demora" in that context can be translated as: located, situated
Leeward?? I don´t know what you tried to say, but i would go with something like:
To the east of Tancaj by socavento (guess ing it's a town)
"paralela" is parallel
"maroma a acumal"=maroma to acumal
"Se fundó", past of the verb "fundar"= "found" in english, just use the past tense of found.

Its longitude is not established (determined, set), but it cannot be LESS than 36 miles and its average latitude cannot be less than 10.

Pure nonsense.

If you're talking about latitude, then longitude must refer to geographical longitude and not "length", but obviously, it would be degrees and not miles! Just nonsense.
