Talking about an island.
Its length is not fixed, but it cannot be more than 36 miles with a an average length of 10.
Or does it mean latitude ?
Its latitude is not fixed, but it cannot be more than 36 miles with an average latitude of 10.

This paper te Prof gave us to translate was written in 1998.
In context:
I have translated it roughly to:
"This is an island that waits(demora) leeward, to the east of Tancaj, it compares to the section of coast that runs along the Maroma a Acumal (Rope to Acumal), at the distance of twenty miles of the continent. Its longitud is not fixed, but it cannot be below 36 miles and its average latitude is 10. In a cove in its western part the town of San Miguel sefundó (melted or burned) in November of 1849."
