Those trying to lend scientific credence to The Bible often cite Isaiah 40:21-22 - "the circle of the earth."

Of course a circle is flat. So the above verse doesn't help.

I've been told time and time again that The Bible speaks of the Earth as a sphere or globe. Where?

And what about these verses?

There are verses that allude to the fact that humanity at that time believed the earth to be flat but never came out and stated it as 'the earth is flat.' Afterall , that social notion held nearly until the time of Columbus so we know humanity did not think of the world as sphere until proved otherwise.

"take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it" Job 38:12-13

"The earth takes shape like clay under a seal" Job 38:14

"The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and its height was great. The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth. " Daniel 4:10-11

A criticism leveled at Scripture is that it has a primitive view of the earth and the heavens. The Bible speaks of such things as the "four corners of the earth" and the earth "resting on pillars." These phrases supposedly show its unscientific character.
The Bible does speak of the four corners of the earth:

And will gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth (Isaiah 11:12).

Does this teach that the earth is a quadrangle? Not at all. It is a figure of speech referring to the four points of the horizon. The same prophet in another place shows properly that the earth is round:

It is He who sits above the circle of the earth (Isaiah 40:22).

Scripture also says:

For the pillars of the earth are the Lords (1 Samuel 2:8).

Does this mean that the biblical world view is that the earth is supported by pillars? Again, what we have here is a figurative statement. Elsewhere the Bible says the earth rests upon nothing:

He hangs the earth on nothing (Job 26:7).

Even today a better scientific description of the earth could not be given.

There are other statements of this sort that Scripture makes, many of them found in the book of Genesis. When examined closely they are not found to be unscientific.

The Bible doesn't tell us exactly that the earth is a globe. Neither does it tell us anything about DNA, or electricity, or that your thoughts are formed in the brain. When it comes to the physical world, biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, etc. it was left for man to explore. It wouldn't be so interesting if we had all the anwers given us. The Bible is written in a language that reflects the level of knowledge people had on these things those days.
God is more interested in informing us about his plan of salvation from death, and how to get eternal life. The Bible tells us about the great controversy between good and evil, and how good will have the final victory. These important things he has told us about in the Bible, but don't expect it to be textbook in natural sciences (even if there are some such examples too).

Thanks for the web page. I don't see any of those verses writing that the earth is flat like a pancake.

in the OT it writes that the earth is a circuit & the heavens are a circuit.

It is written that the earth turns as a seal to the ring (role the ring on a seal). So the earth turns (gravity) to hold things on it. In the bible. Purchase a Strong's Exhaustive (Goes with King James) to get the meaning of root Hebrew & Greek Words, & you will realize that it doesn't write anywhere that the earth is flat. There are 4 corners & that could simple mean N S E & W. There must be 4 corners if that is written in the Bible. The ends of the earth is the end of the earth sticking out of the water. That would inculde other continents.

Realize that God is the Highest Scientist also. He is the one who created the chemical balance and circular order. Why is it that things aren't blowing up or running into each other? Because of the celestial order that God set up.

The expression "four corners of the Earth" is obviously an expression that means the four cardinal compass directions. Unless you are an idiot, you must have figured that out for yourself, so obviously you are a troll with time to waste.

I find it odd that a Muslim is on here trying to discredit the Bible, when Islam recognizes both the Jewish prophets and the Bible as coming from God.

----------------------------------
Many atheists claim that the Bible says that the earth is flat. Specific examples are seldom given - for good reason - they don't exist. The word "flat" occurs only a few times in the Bible, none of which is associated with the Earth. Synonyms, such as level, plain, plane, even, or horizontal are never used in reference to the entire Earth, but only to specific geographic areas. In addition, the Bible indicates in several places that the earth is a sphere suspended in space, with day and night existing simultaneously.... If a flat earth were a doctrine of the Bible, it would have to rank as one of the most obscure.

no one (properly, infrequently all and sundry) at present thinks the solar is going around the earth and we nonetheless communicate of break of day. this is real, that's a linguistic fossil, a leftover from the time while human beings DID certainly think of that the solar went around the earth. Which they very probably did in Biblical situations, after all Joshua replaced into suggested to have made the solar stand nonetheless interior the sky extremely than to have stopped the earth in its orbit. interior an identical way, all of us recognize the earth is around and does not have corners, yet we nonetheless communicate of the 4 corners of the earth as an idiomatic expression meaning "everywhere". yet someplace back in time, that expression could have been meant quite actually, probable alongside with the Biblical era. Greek philosophy held that the earth replaced into around as early because of the fact the 6th century BCE. The Hebrew writers are no longer precisely sought after for taking their leads from the Greeks, regardless of the undeniable fact that. besides the undeniable fact that, you may actually could desire to seem on the acceptable Hebrew be conscious that replaced into translated into "corners". maximum historical flat-earth mythologies observed the earth as a flat disc, i.e. around, no longer oblong, so that's accessible that "corners" could desire to have examine "compass factors" or something like that. after all, this is purely a concern if one holds to a doctrine of literal, be conscious-for-be conscious inerrancy of scripture. that's an especially present day heresy - for the era of heritage, each knowledgeable Jew and Christian replaced into conscious that the Bible consisted of different forms of literature and you won't be able to assign an identical reality-value to, say, Genesis, Psalms and the song of Songs.

Listen. God made the earth period. You won't find any place in the Bible where it says it is flat.

Also you must realize all people believed the earth was flat. Not just Christians. See the below link.

Search on. Perhaps the meaning you suggest isn't what is meant at all. God doesn' t make mistakes.

I don't know your motive in this, but if it is to discredit the Bible
you will never succeed. Some of the greatest minds of all time have made the same attempt in the past and in the present and still are trying in vain.

The problem: Puny mortal and finite intellect attempting to understand Almighty, immortal and infinite wisdom. Obviously the human intellect, flawed by sin will never be able to appropriately understand the simplicity of God because it comes through divine revelation alone, and that is preceded by faith in God, repentance for sin and salvation through the blood Christ shed to cleanse sin in our lives. Then and only then will anyone ever grasp spiritual truth that far transcends the natural mortal mind of men.

Dear zzz,

The Bible states in Isaiah 40:22, "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:"
