Bad reputation (whether real or simply perceived). Most notably, they admited in 2000 and then again in 2004 that known defects in their cars have been covered up, dating all the way back to 1977. Since then they have had to rebuild their reputation, and have extended their bumper-to-bumper warranty to 5yr/60k miles (matching Hyundai/Kia).

I'm on the sales/finance end and Mitsubishi has been a problem vehicle for almost a decade. They were a good vehicle in the 80's and even the early 90's with their 3000 GT, their Gallants etc but as of right now some banks don't even finance the type of vehicle. It is considered the worst import right now.

i own a shop, and right now the main reason is they are problem cars or considered to be ,and that's why the value falls away from them, not all of them did give a lot of problems, but the ones that did have given them a bad name, but its good for the consumer, like you said they can be bought real cheap, and not all of them do give problems, but now they are listed as being problem cars ,and as long as they carry that ,they will loose their value a lot faster than normal cars will,i like them myself, and you can buy them real cheap but that's the reason their like they are right now,so its a buyers market on those right now, good luck with it,hope it last you real good.
