The war in Ireland is not about religion. It is about Irish sovereignty. Northern Ireland to this day is controlled by Great Brittan.

The religious divide, is actually a political divide. The group on the side of total Irish sovereignty is predominately Catholic. Those that want to keep ties with England are mostly Protestant.

The issue in Northern Ireland is political not religious. The media, who is always looking for short cuts and not the whole story, calls the participants Catholics and Protestants.

The conflict is about whether the British territory (probably the wrong word) of Northern Ireland should remain British or should become part of Ireland.

The majority of people in Ireland are Catholics. The majority of people in England and Northern Ireland are Protestants. There are actually Catholics and Protestants on either side.

The terrorists on either side of the issue are not Christian in any sense of the word.

With love in Christ.

Actually, the hatred is more political than religious. At one time, Great Britain ruled ALL of Ireland, rather than just the North, until the Irish rebelled, under the leadership of Michael Collins. Since then only Northern Ireland remains British. However, most Irish people want Northern Ireland to reunite with the Republic of Ireland. Since the majority of Irish people are Catholic, & the majority of British people are Protestant, the 2 Christian Churches came to signify the hostility between both camps.

The deal between Catholics and Protestants has been going on for centuries, and not just in Northern Ireland. It was the cause of t several other major conflicts in England and around the world. The Gunpowder Plot in 1605 was about Catholics vs. Protestants.

hmmm to you I have to ask "what's the deal between Catholics and Protestants in the USA?

When I was in 2nd grade, shortly after we had moved, my mother decided we should go to church....she chose the Lutheran Faith for us to go to instead of the Catholic Faith that my estranged dad had been raised in.
As I and a few kids from church were walking home, we had passed a catholic church that had gotten out just a bit earlier...children were playing outside, and when they saw us, they began shouting and throwing stones at us, one of which hit me just above my left eye (scar still there) I was so startled that children from a church would throw stones at us, because we were comming from a church too!
I remember the bewilderment more then the pain of the stone hitting me...finally, someone explained it was because Catholics do not like Lutherans....and double whammy....the boys were members of a boyscout troop from the Catholic Church....
Does it matter? They have probably forgotten "why" they are fighting but do it because that is how they are raised.
Hypothetically, think of Yahoo Answers as the "country" we all reside in here....Why do stones get thrown in here?
You have your answer
Peace be with you

Since 9/11 and the London subway bombings, they've decided that terrorism isn't a good thing. They are going to tolerate each other. The reduction in the rift between churches doesn't hurt either.

The religious intollerance that a FEW people of both sides have against each other, combined with the involvement of religious leaders in the region's politics.

Religion and Politics don't mix.

I think they have different views on how to live, due to a bad history. Being nice to one another doesnt seem to work, so they end up being not so nice. Its like carrot and stick and I think the answer is outside of religion. People tend to remember the past when things arn't going so well. They tend to blame the first thought in their head. Things will ease and improve as ecomies strengthen and trickle through to the yous and me's of the world. Just watch!

They've been vying for political influence, just like the war between Shi'ites and Sunnis in Iraq. It's not about religion, but politics.
