Adults average 2 to 3 colds per year. Children average 10-12 colds yearly. A 17 year old averages 5-7 colds per year. You never catch the "same" cold twice, but new strains develop constantly. The older you get, the more immunity you have to colds and to the flu. I'm 58 and haven't had a cold or the flu in several years. I live a healthy life, but not to any extreme. I work in a building with 400 others and the younger employees (and employees with young children) get sick more frequently. I do wash my hands frequently. I do insist my sick employees go home. I do not shake hands with sick people, unless I don't like them--then I hug them (just kidding). My assistant hands me documents with a tissue if she's feeling ill. She sprays the phone with lysol if she's sick. The point is--there are a lot of things you can do to prevent a cold, but that's not what you asked. Sorry for the long response.
