I mean when I was in my 20's, I was very slim but now in my early 30's I put on weight. I'm freaking out I might look like a cow if nothing's done. Is it the food you eat, luck of excerise, something to do with your genes.

It's easy to gain weight as you get older if you're not vigilant about it. Metabolism does slow down somewhat, but it's not that much of a factor. You get less exercise, eat more, and it becomes a habit. Remember how active you were at a young age, always going places and doing things? Become that person again. Be aware of everything you're eating, but without becoming obsessive about it. Stop eating out. Execise regularly, make it a part of your daily routine. That in itself will kick -start your metabolism.

Genetics may have something to do with it, but if you weren't always overweight, you don't have to be now. I'm 53 and weigh 116, after four kids (one at 44), and working at a desk job. I take my lunch to work, always the same thing (Variety makes you eat more!) I exercise by bicycling or brisk walking every day. I do stuff with my little son, like playing basketball. Just try to stay active! It makes a huge difference.

Metabolism s-l-o-w-s down as we grow older, thus it is definitely harder to lose weight. Keep on being active and do weight training to gain muscles. More muscles you have the more you can burn calories efficiently. Lastly, eat right, do not go on a fad diet. Eating right is a lifestyle change. People cannot be eating right 100% of the time. A ratio of 80% good eating and a 20% of not, is the realistic way of sticking to your proper eating. Do not deny yourself of comfort foods, just watch your portion intake and do not use food as a reward for doing something good. I know it's hard not to think of food when you are feeling down, we eat to comfort ourselves in times of stress. So, make sure you do not have big bag of chips, cookies, alcohol and what not in your cupboards. Do a spring cleaning in your kitchen! Tip: for portion intake, buy the 100 calories packets of cookies, jello, and other goodies. Good luck!

Some of it has to do with genes but your metabolism slows down after 30!! If you don't continue to live an active life and get some cardio you will put on some extra weight!!

Your metabolism slows down. You can't eat fast food every night and stay the same anymore. I'm 25, and have started to watch what I eat a little more b/c I'm already noticing that I can't eat what I did at 15...and not put on some weight.

It's been proven that your metabolism slows down very little as you age because of genetics.

What does change is your lifestyle, and if you don't exercise enough the metabolism WILL slow down. Be active as much as possible even if you work in an office! Avoid the takeout and fast food as much as possible, too. It'll help!

probley lack of excerise and oh hormones are not a wired up as once was. I am 30 so I know lol. Before we probley to have to workout much. NOw we do. Plus our bodies responded to exercise and dieting better when we were younger. As you get older the sign of use abusing our bodies show up as we get older. we take our youth for granted.

Your metabolism slows down, you stop exercising as much, and you start eating whatever you want without worrying. It's not bad because once someone is old they are happy and usually married so they don't have to worry much about attracting another person.

With ageing, everything in one's system also changes and needs a fresh approach. Whereas, if one continues to consume everything as in the normal adult life, the absorption power of the body being weak or slow, most of what one has consumed turns into totally unwanted fat!

Your metabolism and need for food/fuel does slow down over time.

Also, are you less active than you once were? The more you sit/less you move, the fewer calories you burn and the less food you need. Take up a new sport, walk to work, something to be more active and burn more fuel.

What Lafamelle said. The metabolism rate lowers as people grow older. Plus they tend to be more sedentary compared to when they were younger.
