Keep their nails trimmed regularly.
Provide a couple of scratching posts for them.
Use cat nip to sprinkle on the scratching posts to lure them to it.
If that fails, look into a product called Soft Paws. It's plastic caps that go over the nails that can be purchased at a pet store.

That was a rather silly thing to do wasn't it - getting new furniture? I have cats and I can tell you that it won't look new long. Better to have kept the old furniture and enjoy your cats while you have them. After they have crossed over, then you can have all the new furniture you want. And it's then you will wish with all your heart you were fortunate enough to see their little claw-sharpening marks.
But you can try. So either use aluminum tinfoil (they hate it) or places like PetSmart have double-sided sticky tape strips. Apply the clear tape and if the cats try to jump on it, they will spring away from the stickiness.

You can do a couple of things. They have clear couch protectors at Walmart you can buy, you can get 2-3 scratching posts (easy to make with old carpet and some wood) and keep a water bottle near by so when they start to scratch you just spray some water on them to make it a bad experience for them. Try trimming their nails or even having the front nails removed.

Personally, I buy claw caps for my two cats. They work wonders. They're just little claw shaped plastic things that slip on their claws. Easy as pie. I've always thought that de-clawing cats is kind of cruel, but that's just me. You can find claw caps at most pet stores. Sometimes feline veterinarians sell them for owners who choose not to have the surgery done. They're usually pretty cheap too. Go to http://www.softpaws.com/ for some pictures and such. Other than that, investing in some squirt bottles isn't a bad idea. Hope that helps.
