Laws are made by politicians who bend easily to the will of interest groups. It's futile to look for logic or consistency in the law. Sorry.

That is a decent an valid point I believe. I have seen first hand many times the difference wearing a seat belt made in an accident. I have also seen first hand the difference wearing a helmet would have made in motorcycle crashes.
The reasonings behind the seat belt laws are two fold. One there is irrefutable evidence that wearing one makes you much safer under almost all circumstance (note I said almost as some like to argue about the very few circumstance where a seat belt could do more harm then good). Two, in theory the more people that wear their seat belts the less injuries in motor vehicle crashes results in lower health insurance cost for all of us.
There have been and will continue to be pushes for the enactment of helmet laws for the same reasons as above. The opposition to these cite comfort reasons in addition to the right to chose which is the main argument against seat belt laws.
I think many people that ride motorcycles, atleast the ones that find it as a form of recreation see riding a MC as a way to feel "free", kind of like riding in a convertible with the top down and having to wear a helmet would take away from that experience. I am not saying that I agree but I think that may play a part in helmet laws not being passed.

Never mind about the law, lets face it your a lot safer wearing a seat belt, just the same as if you wear a crash helmet, common sense should tell you wear the bloody thing, and save yourself from physical harm.

A motorcyclist should be asked if he will wear a helmet or not. If the operator won't, there should be an endorsement on the license (like needing glasses). If the operator chooses to go without a helmet, his insurance should be higher. If he is caught without a helmet and without the proper license, he should be fined.

Motorists do not get a choice, because that is the law. There is no comparison between the seatbelt, and the helmet.

Why wouldn't you wear your seatbelt? It takes all of 3 seconds to put on and will save your life if you need it. People who don't take the extremely short amount of time to put on a seatbelt are quite possibly the laziest people on this planet.

i believe that if we have to wear a seatbelt, then they should have to wear a helmet...you have just as much of a chance of surviving a car crash without a seatbelt as you do surviving a motorcycle accident without a helmet...not too much...
