I am driving to Canada next week with my sister, do I need a passport or just my birth certificate still?

If you are driving to Canada, you will need a picture ID such as a drivers license or passport. Passports are not required by US citizens who drive across the Canada-USA border until January 2008. If you are to fly into Canada, then you would need your passport.

The issue here is the US regulations under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, not the Canadian regulations.

US citizens without a passport but with some other good ID like a birth certificate and driver's licence are welcome into Canada. A passport is not required, and there are no plans to make a passport mandatory for US citizens to enter Canada by road or by air. Currently, there is no requirement to have a passport to enter the US by road, but there is by air.

So if you are flying, the problem is getting back into the US. The Canadian border authorities are obliged not to let you into Canada without a passport (unless you tell them you are driving back) because then you would be trapped in Canada - even if you are a US citizen!

Until January 1, 2008, US and Canadian citizens do not require passports to cross the border at road and sea crossings - but you have to have good ID. A passport will make the trip much easier, so why would you not have a passport?

For now your driver's license and birth certificate is all you need for driving into Canada.

If you were flying into Canada you would need a passport now. A passport will be mandatory for all types of travel beginning on January 1, 2008.

Just the birth certificate. I heard they will eventually require passports but I don't think that's until 2008. Read the website link I posted.
