I've never heard that one before, but I suppose it's because of the thickness of the honey which may cause them to choke.

Hello Hottie,

Honey can be contaminated with very small amounts of a bacteria which produces the nasty toxin called botulism. It doesn't affect older children and adults, but it could have a significant effect on an infant.

Avoiding honey for the very small ones comes under the heading of better safe than sorry. Infants do better with table sugar in small amounts for sweetening.

Hope this helps.
Tara

Most honey sold in grocery stores is not raw. It has been filtered, and in some cases, heated to kill any bacteria that might be contained therein. Heating the honey is what renders it unhealthy for adults, and dangerous for infants. In the heating process, all the live enzymes in the honey are destroyed. It is the live enzymes and their precursors, contained in the honey, that make it such a healthy food for both adults and infants.

Infants get some of their immunities from their mother. the rest they build up over time. Honey is filled with the pollen from the plants that are near the bee hives.

Probably because the common infant isn't trained or experianced enough to use their mouth properly, and honey might sticky enough that the infant would choke on it.
But I don't know. :)
