When working out at the gym, is it better to do 3 sets on each machine or just 2 sets at a higher weight?

if you are trying to lose weight - light weights and many reps of 2-3 sets
if you are trying to gain - heavy weights and low reps the same thing 2-3 sets

It all depends if you are a female or a male,if your a woman ,just working out is not going to help you if ur overwieght ur diet matters ,smoking cigs. matters,i weigh 135 and 5 sets is what i do i'm evenly proportioned try not to work out one body part more than another sit up , and crunches for the belly.
