Believe it or not, it can be VERY hard to tell - even for a vet! - because the important parts are extremely small (in spite of what some of the answers have said!)

A friend's cat had kittens and we said we would have on. My son decided to put a week old one into a nearly empty glass of wine - 'to see if it would fit' - it did, easily! The kitten and its mum then licked it clean. However, it was taken to the vets for a check-up and the vet thought it may be male, but was not sure because of the age -he was right! We know which kitten it was because we were worried it would be damaged (alcohol at such a young age - it was not a very sober kitten!) - so we said we would have him and marked his claws with nail varnish! The kitten is now 9 years old and absolutely fine - and no longer fits in wine glasses!!!! (and my son did not try it again anyway!)

So, ask a vet - do not work on descriptions on this page!

When kittens are very young, it can be difficult to tell males from females. Generally, if you look under that tail a male cat will look like a semi-colon, two dots in a line and a female cat will look like an up-side-down exclamation point. Naturally, as they get older a male cat is recognizable by the scrotal sac and the testicles that are under the tail.

It might seem a little gross, but I can tell from birth... if its a female, its organs are right below the butt, and if its a male, the space between is bigger... it's really simple.

lift the tail up and the femail should have more holes than the male.

tun them upside down
and exmine the tail
the male has a scrotal sac at the base of the tail and the female doesnt
so it should be penis (in fur) scrotal sac and then anus and then tail

No need to panic. Just look at it's behind. Females usually have two areas, one called the anus, and the other...vulva. That's it.

The males have the anus, testes, and penis. Easy as pie. :).

Look at their bottom, this will help you distinguse between male and female, males generally ahve *pardon my laugage* balls.
Also, their physical apperance can count.
Orange kitties are almost always males. and Tortishells are female.

Look under the tail - the anus and vagina are closer together than the anus and penis
