I am looking at buying a rodent gun - looking at shooting rabbits and possums and the likes - not coyottes as they are hard to come by in NZ.

from experiance I like the .22 mag as it shoots flatter and of course has has better hitting power than the 22 LR

BUT - what are the .17 like. I was told buy one person that they are effected by wind quite a bit.

not planning on shooting much over 100 metres max 150ish at a quess.

Another vote for the .22 Magnum.

I have shot the .17s and yes, they are cool as heck, but there's some big drawbacks as well. First, which .17? Ammo cost and availability is an issue to be considered, plus I live in a windy area and have been told by people I trust that they just cannot be shot any distance in the wind.

Go with the tried and true option....get the .22Mag.

I really think the .17 hmr is a better choice

The speed of the bullet means that by the time it drifts due to wind it has traveled quite a distance

That little bullet blows the crap out of stuff. I would say for really small stuff it is more effective than the 22 mag (but hey they both will knock the crap out of small stuff)

From my experience the 22 mag is very accurate despite what you might of heard (I had read many bad reports and that it was somehow inherently inaccurate). The 17 is also very accurate.

Given the choice between a popular round or an unpopular round always pick the popular round. The .17 hmr has swept the country. I am actually afraid that the 22wmr will eventually go the way of older rimfires.

Choice of ammo seems comparable right now.

1st of all, a high velocity round will not wear out a high quality barrel any faster than a lower velocity round will. I shoot 22magnum at 120 yards, ( aliitle over 100 meters) with great success. Wind WILL in fact blow a lighter bullet around more than a heavier bullet. Personally I prefer the 22 magnum over the 17hmr simply because ammo is cheaper, I have more grain weights and bullet styles to choose from, and for what I use it for, a 17hmr simply isn't to be trusted. For your pusposes, honestly either round will be fine, just consider ammo costs, ammo availability, and ammo choices. This should help your decision.

I have a 22 mag, and a 17 mag, and I like the 17 better.

Best Choice 22 Mag> 17 has short barrel life because of high velocity...
