I'll try to cover four important things. And I'm going to be honest.
Yeah , it's hard being 13 and if you've never gone to a public school you are probably feeling overwhelmed right now. I'm 27, but if I had it to do over again I would have changed a few things when I was thirteen. One it sounds like a cliche' and something your mom would say but it's so true. Be yourself, be positive, friendly, outgoing and kind. Smile a lot, tell people you think that their outfits, hair - earings whatever are cute and mean it because you can tell when some one is being fake. Always have something pleasant to say when you are approached or approach someone. I figured this out after I got into High School and even though I wasn't a the cheerleader type I was friends with every group in school. It takes some practice and you may get the butterflies - but no one hates a person that is friendly. Don't worry you will make friends - this is great because you are going to meet people you may have otherwise never had a chance too. When it comes to guys, guys at that age are 'tards I don't have any nicer way of saying it. Be patient with them, don't do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, don't sleep with them - save that for when they are more mature. That doesn't mean you won't be thinking about that stuff - just realise that you have plenty of time there is no need to rush into something once you lose you will never get back. I got my first kiss when I was thirteen and I wouldn't let him kiss me until I was sure it was perfect. Don't lose that, a woman that respects herself is sexy woman. Don't get so involved in the drama of school that you don't get your work done, it may seem really unimportant now but later on you do need some of it - so put effort into it. And if someone or a group of someones decideds to be rude to you - shake it of and be friendly anyway - they won't know how to handle it believe me. Or plain and simple ignore them - if they are going to be rude they simply don't exist in your world. The next five years are going to be alot of fun - Good Luck!

Hey! I'm homeschooled now but I went to public school through the fifth grade. Basically, school is really no big deal. Yeah, sometimes there's people who don't like you and people who are bullies but seriously, almost always there's a group of nice kids to hang out with. I used to have a hard time making friends, but just go up to a kid and introduce yourself and tell them a little about you. This is what I did when I did in fifth grade when my best friend moved. The girl I talked to ended up being such a good friend. As far as the schooling part goes, public school work is really easy. Homeschooling (were you homeschooled?) is much tougher. The food in my school cafeteria was good but most of the time the food isn't the best in the world. Perhaps you could get a tour through the school. Maybe the principal would send a nice girl in your grade and class to show you around. Who knows, she might be your first new school friend! That's really all public school is. I hope I helped. You'll be fine, just remember to be yourself and have fun. Good luck!

Aw don't worry about it. Public schools are fun. What sucks is that you're entering at an age where cliques rule the school, so you're going to experience some mean people, mostly girls. You're going to find friends though. Just be you, and you'll find people that like it. Don't try too hard to fit it, just be yourself.

Get involved with some groups within the school. It's a sure way to make friends. If you play a sport, try out for the team, or join a club that you have interest in because you know the other people in that club like that stuff too. That means you have something in common with them already!

Don't worry about the school work. That'll be fine. Just have fun, make friends, and get involved.

Good luck!!

If you were homeschooled then you might feel a little overwhelmed at first. Give it some time and don't give up. It is definately alot different. Everyone likes the new kid usually. My best advice is to get involved in an extracurricular activity that interests you. Sports, peer mediation, band, chorus, chess club, student council..so many of them and that is where you will really bond with those who have things in common with you. If you were in private school then it really isnt a whole lot different. The rules will be different maybe. Good luck and wear a big smile the first day of school and just be yourself.

Its all right to be terrified, but don't worry, all you need is some support from the people around you to get through it.

But i have a feeling that you will do fine in your school, cause you already have the guts to express your feelings here on the Net.

Anyway, goodluck in your school!

Get some binders. Don't be afraid to make friends. Make a good first impression, but don't try to be cool or funny. Be yourself! Be sure to ask kids about the school, or some interesting stories about it. If they say something bad about it, don't buy it.

Most of all, have fun.

Is there a way you could tour the school ahead of time? That way you would know where things are and you could find your way around.
