You may have a case of OCD (explained above) but I think if you do it is a very mild case. Don't think about selling it unless you see high prices for the same stuff on ebay. You need to wean yourself off this thinking. Don't do it all at once. Take one kitchen size garbage bag, put some stuff from one room in it, and throw it out. Whatever you think about it when you put it in the garbage, DON"T go out and bring it back inside. The next day do the same thing in the same room until that room is clean. Enjoy that clean room, and think to yourself how good you would feel if your whole house is like this.

If you haven't used it for more than a year, get rid of it! If you have items that you think are valuable, try looking on eBay for items similar to yours - this help you estimate how much the item might be worth. Or, if you have the time, have a garage sale. If you don't have time for a garage sale, donate/give away or throw away the items. They're not doing you any good by cluttering up your life. If you have a hard time parting with things - try filling and removing one box at a time. This will let you start removing the things that you want the least. As you declutter, you'll find that you don't miss these things and the decluttering will become much easier!

Omg i have the same problem! I say: 1. get some storage boxes to store your stuff. Sort things according to their uses e.g. old clothes you dont wear but want to keep, old clothes you might wear someday, electronics, magazines etc. Then go away for a while, look at them and ask youself, 1. in all the time that i have made the effort to keep this item, has it come in handy? 2. will keeping this item for longer be useful to me? 3. what way exactly will i use this item for if i decide to keep it? If you find that you really dont need the item, trash it. If you find that you can't possibly get rid of the item put it somewhere that will not make your house look messy. For example, say you have some old magazines you want to keep, put them in a magazine rack (or in a storage box) and put them in a closet or stack them neatly in a bookshelf so they become part of your house in a good way. If it's a trinket or something sentimental, make it a focus of your house. Put it on the mantlepiece. However, things look bad if you have too many trinkets in the same place. Spread them around the house in appropriate places (or even somewhere unexpected like betwen books or on the windowsill). If it's more housey things, try and go for the 'shabby chic'/quirky look. Basically, try to incorporate the stuff into the look and feel of your house rather than being randomly piled into your cupboards and shelves. good luck!

Reprint from Medical article:

Has clutter created chaos in your life? Are you unwilling to throw anything away? What you call collecting may actually be hoarding.
Is It OCD? Or ADD?
Many psychologists believe that hoarding is a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), while others argue that it may be a variant of attention deficit disorder (ADD), which leaves people having difficulty with decision making, procrastination, and staying on task long enough to organize their surroundings. "Try to give hoarders an assignment to throw something out, and they won't do it," says Stephen C. Josephson, PhD, clinical psychologist in New York City, and clinical associate professor of psychology in psychiatry at Cornell Medical School. "I see the clutter more often in people with ADD than OCD."

What About Treatment?
The treatment of hoarding can be challenging since it means changing behaviors that may almost be lifelong. Some hoarders are simply too embarrassed to seek help. Others panic when contemplating discarding their "treasures."

seriously sit down and take a look at the stuff that you have, if you don't use it now, and haven't in the last month, then get rid of it. have a garage sale or call your friends/ family and ask them if they need the item, even bring it to the salvation army. don't think about what you spent on the stuff... if its junk then it doesnt matter. price only matters if its something "big" like... a car, jewelry, sentimental value. a wooden spoon with kool-aid stains on it shouldn't be worth $30. you know what I mean? :) good luck!

Pease don't tell me you're a packrat...First go through everything and get rid of anything you don't need (the junk). If you think something might be of value check it on ebay. Finally, and I know I'll get some down votes but it needs to be said, seek some counselling. Being a packrat is a mental issue about not wanting to let go. This will cause you enormous stress in your life and some say can lead to physical illness.

wow... i hate people on yahoo sometimes... you ask a good question, and people act like idiots....

there are many people that have this problem, from what ive seen its kinda normal... its like others have said... see if you can seperate it to stuff that has sentimental value, and things you just dont wanna get rid of... try doing something like on the TV show "clean sweep"... have a garage sale with the stuff u wanna get rid of, or stick it on e-bay... it might help to have a trusted friend over to have a neutral view on everything, and to tell u its just not worth it...

hope all goes well for u...

Apparently this can be a form of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) Maybe you should go see your doctor and get it checked out. Counselling could help.
