My husband and I had to renew this year, and sent in our applications and old passports sometime in February. It's supposed to take about 6 weeks. I checked online, and they are backed up. I tried to call - we are leaving for Europe in 2 weeks. I can't get through on the phone. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know who told you 6 weeks as it hasn't been that amount of time since the beginning of the year. It takes over 12 weeks to get a passport now.

The only thing you can do now is keep calling.

With the new passport laws there is are massive numbers of people applying for passports. The average time is really taking 16 - 20 weeks now. I know of someone who expedited their passport and it took 13 weeks. You should go to a passport office if you live anywhere near one. You may have to change your dates or destination.

I would keep checking on-line. It should show the status of your passport application. Ours took several weeks longer than we expected. We did ours in Feb. as well and received them in April. Go onto travel.state.gov and see if there is any way to contact them by e-mail, since you are having difficulties getting through by phone. Good luck!

totally random, but it worked for my cousin a few months ago...when you are on the phone using the automated system...go for the spanish option- they had operators working to speak to non-english speakers. once my cousin had someone on the phone, she was able to explain the situation and was advised abouta passport office nearby where they went in person. not sure if that helps- whether you have an office near you or whether it was a total fluke, but try the spanish option, you'll have more success if you can get a real live person on the phone and explain your situation.

i know this must be nerve-wracking, good luck!

The best option is to send them an email using the link http://travel.state.gov/passport/about/npic/npic_896.html, they seem to respond in 2-3 days. The only time I was able to get through to them was around 2:00 pm eastern time, you may want to try calling around that time.
