i would suggest shades of green because it looks good on brown colors. green is also relaxing since it is the color of nature. im assuming that either brown and white is the color of your walls. no need for repainting. you can accessorize your room with green colors.. like green beddings and curtains..some accent green pieces..just dont overdo it. random distinct pieces are advisable. keep it minimal since you want to achieve a modern look.

It depends on what YOU consider relaxing. I am personally relaxed by the color blue...I have light airy blue, with light airy curtains, if I want to be awake yet serene. I have darker blues if I want a deep sleep or meditation. I also have a pale sunshiney yellow for rooms I want both calm and happy energy. Other people, however, would go nuts. They simply arent 'their' colors.
What I recomend is going to a website like...I think either home depot or lowes websites, or just google, there are alot...they have a program where you pick one of their rooms and can paint them different colors to see what you think of the color combinations.
Personally, though, after you pick your 'relaxing' color, I would put an energizing red somewhere around your work area (desk or wherever, as long as you wont be staring at it while your trying to sleep)
Black can pretty much be a modern accent anywhere as trim and the color of just about any furniture without looking a bit dark. You may ever choose black furniture with red accents, and red bedding (I would choose a deeper red for the bedding myself just so its darker and doesnt wake up the senses too much) It would look very modern and anything but dull.
Good luck and I hope I was able to help!

I'm focusing on you saying you want relaxing and you want to modernize. The current hot trend with brown is aqua. That would answer both of your needs. Go with a medium light color for the best look. If you go too light it might still look boring. If you go too dark, it might be a little much. And you could then accessorize with darker aqua touches, like throw pillows, vases, or area rugs.

How about a nice mellow taupe color. Then you can go with black and red accents. The nice thing about Taupe is it's a very modern color than goes with just about any colors you want. So if you tire of your accents you can switch to almost any colors you want without having to repaint your room. AND it is a nice relaxing, soft color.

okay, here is the trick, choose a really pretty pearly light gray color, that is your neutral, and paint the walls with it. (You can paint one wall, preferably the smallest wall, one of your other dramatic colors, like red or black) also choose a neutral carpet, perhaps a deeper gray tone, then accessorize the room with reds and blacks in different textures, like your curtains, bedding, pillows, chair pillows, throw rugs, etc. Try different wild patterns, too, like checks and stripes, for your accessories
Get the basic neutral down first and then have fun with the little things! you can always change them around to suit your fancy!
