Shouldn't she then step aside and allow you to get in line ahead of her, since you were there first?

Nope, that would simply downgrade the courtesy you gave. You should not expect any kind of direct reward for good manners, but those same good manners bring many indirect rewards as the people around you DO in fact notice if this is your normal behavior.

I agree with JS who stated: 'If you are stopping to open the door then you are essentially saying "after you" meaning you are putting that person first.' I find it strange that this is even a question in someone's mind. That it would even occur to anyone to try to hop in front of the person afterwards is very strange behavior indeed. In my entire life, I have never had anyone open the door for me and then try to step up in front of me. That would be very rude. Either be polite all the way, or don't bother. Now, if 10 people behind her try slipping through, that's a different story, it would be obvious that those people were taking advantage of your kindness and should be dealt with as such.

It would be a nice thing for her to do. It would also be a nice thing to let her go ahead of you in line. Exact situation has happened to me several times, and I always say or motion for him to take his rightful place in line. Always, he says go ahead. How nice. One man even said, I have a lot of things to take care of, go ahead. I assured him that my transaction would be brief. He smiled.
One thing you could do, is to hold the door open for the lady, without stepping aside, as you are passsing through it. That way, you have done the polite thing, and you keep your place in line.

If you are stopping to open the door then you are essentially saying "after you" meaning you are putting that person first. You should not then expect to jump in front of them after you've let them ahead of you. They are doing nothing wrong by going straight into line.

No, I'd let her have the spot in line for the same reason I opened the door.

Either way, what difference does it make? Is one peorson ahead of you really gonna make or break your time frame? I think it'd just be a kind thing to do to let them go ahead.

That would be a kind thing to do as long as you were there first. I always motion anyone to go ahead of me if it's certain they were waiting ahead of me, doesn't matter their gender.

I usually do that anyway. But if you let someone in before you, it usually means you give up your spot in line.
