I have a Pontiac Sunfire and I want to put in 4 new speakers and a new deck. I have worked a lot with audio, but I am pretty unfamiliar with cars and car stereos. Should I tackle it?

I install professionally, and I can tell you that there are some cars that are best left to a pro, and others that just about anyone can do. Yours is one that just about anyone can do.

The key is to use the right adapting parts. If you do it yourself, don't try to cut the wires and guess what's what. Buy the right harness, mounting kit, and antenna adapter. You can also buy speaker wiring adapters that will make connecting the speakers much easier.

If your Sunfire is a 2000+, you need to decide whether to use an expensive adapter module that will retain your warning chimes, or a cheaper harness that will take a little more work to install and won't keep your chimes. You can e-mail me for more information if you need it. (95-99 Sunfires don't have to worry about this).

To remove the factory radio, open the glove box and take out two screws on the left side of the glove box opening. Then you can just pull off the panel that covers the radio; the radio is held in with 3 screws underneath.

Good luck!

It's really easy. You can go to Best Buy and get an adapter kit that matches your car to the stereo brand. It'll come with instructions. All you have to do is take out your old deck, plug in the new deck and install the adapter. It doesn't take any special tools or fabrication. As far as the speakers, make sure you get ones that fit your stock housings. Best Buy used to have a computer set up that you could check everything that fits your car. But seriously, any moron that can follow directions can install a car stereo. If you want to add a subwoofer, that takes a little more. It's easy but you need more attention to detail like lifting up your carpeting to hide wires and stuff. But if it is just a deck and speakers, go for it.

Absolutely, I'm 16 and did it just fine. As long as you know how to use crimp caps and have basic tools you'll be fine. If you buy your equipment from crutchfield, which is reasonably priced to start, and you spend 130 or more on a head unit they throw in 55 dollars of install accessories and they give you AWESOME step by step instructions. Also they will basically be on the phone with you the whole time if you want them to. This is a great site, not really for the prodcuts or prices, but the support is amazing!

you need to have it done professionally. trust i have been down that path my goal was to save money, but i ended up having someone do it for me.some people think that it is easy to install stereos yeah its easy if you do a half *** job plus you need a installer with knowledge to tell you what will give you the sound you're looking for and on top of that installing car stereos is not a game if you don't have everything in its place (right cables, right amp, etc.) your car can blow up no joke. don't be desperate save your money and get everything done right so you wont have to come back again

If you want to pay money and could afford it go ahead professionally put it in you car. If you can't afford it or you feel lazy going to the place then do it manually. Proffessionally of course is so much nicer than manually putting the speaker

yeah, the speakers won't be too much trouble, just know how to remove the mounting plate and cover and the headunit won't be hard, just make sure you have the wiring harness and since its a pontiac get the GM frame, and its all plugging in things from there, its not hard

Try a site called installdr.com ---great info there. It may be difficult to figure out how to remove the various items and speakers with out a manual but eautorepair.net has online access to factory service manuals for a fee.

Do it yourself. If you have not purchased the equipment yet, go to Crutchfield.com. They supply all necessary wiring harnesses, mounting hardware, and instructions (that are so simple 'Even a caveman can do it') LOL Their prices are competetive too.

Let a pro do it, even off duty which is cheaper yet.
