Tension has eased in the town of Cainta in the province of Rizal, a day after supporters of reelectionist Mayor Mon Ilagan and former mayor Ben Felix protested the slow counting of votes.

Supporters from both camps converged Tuesday at the municipal hall, protesting what they described as slow canvassing of votes. Tension mounted Tuesday night between both camps.

In a phone interview, Senior Superintendent Felipe Roxas, OIC of the Rizal Provincial Police Office, said protesters have begun dispersing earlier Wednesday morning.

"There was slight tension between both camps but their supporters have dispersed and there is no tension as of this morning," Roxas said.

He added: "We have asked the chairman of the board of canvassers to speed up the counting of votes. They have already explained that the delay was due to counterchecking of figures in the election tally."

Roxas said the board of canvassers itself has helped pacify the tension between supporters of Ilagan and Felix.

He expects the proclamation of winners in Cainta either late Wednesday or early Thursday morning.

Ilagan, a former TV reporter, was elected mayor in 2004, ending the more than half-century reign of the Felix family in Cainta, a town in the eastern outskirt of Metro Manila.
