I miss the days before the fall of the soviet union. With a stalemate of that magnatude and two super powers, the world just seemed more stable then.

you personally may have been, but i can assure you that the people who wanted to see their relatives in berlin on the other side of the wall werent. they were killed with regularity. i also prefer living without threat and fear. addressing despotism is the best way to pursue living in peace. liberal extremists as today have never understand that principle. cut and run is a classic example. naked cowardice is not an answer. controntation is in these cases is.

Great question, what most fail to realize is that with detente we did have two off setting world powers.
But here is the key thing.
Europe was devided beteen the east and the west.
With Germany divided right down the middle.
1989 does not seem so long ago, but we live in a drastically different world today.
I never thought the Soviets were our worst enemy, always believed Germany is our greatest enemy, next is China.
In the near term we have most radical Islamic nations that wants us dead, they are the immediate threat. But really pale into insignificance compared to these two nations.
Watch for the EU to turn totally hostile, the EU monetary system was an act of aggression agasint the dollar and their allie the US, now they are set to launch the Galileo satalite system, think its for cell phones and GPS units so they can fish and hunt?
No its for military purposes first and then commercial.
How about Airbus or the beurocrats at Belguim.
Record fine for Microsoft, since when do they have jerisdiction over american companies.

I miss the days when people respected their country and it's leadership. Libby, it just seemed more stable because in those days, we didn't have the whiners, wimps and those who spend half of their lives on line bashing their President.

Those are the days that I miss. The young people of this country scare the hell out of me. Each of them on this forum has never known what fear is or what a true threat is. Their rose colored glasses take them so far away from reality that it's scary. Ideally, they want to see us tip toe through the tulips without a care in the world... Great thinking, but it certainly won't keep us safe.

I "seemed" safer because it was all the media talked about. There were still many other situations going on, i.e. terrorism, civil wars etc. that just didn't take the spotlight like the Cold War did.
Lets face it, the thought of MAD was on everyones minds more than anything else. It was a stable destablization.

Nothing was stabile then!!! It was a real danger to start the 3th world war.Believe me.
That's why the things changed because the preasure was so much that could explode every moment.
What are you missing? The hate between the people of the two blocks or the closen borders?!
I am one who lived in a such country in Eastern Europe.Do you know what is it to be born in a prison and to live into it all your life?Do you know what is it to see special shops and all there to be selling only with dollars and that you couldn't buy for your child even one chocolate, not because you do not have that 1 dollar, but because was stricktly forbedden for us,the ordinary people to buy even for a dolar something?
Do you know how your husband escaping trought the border with an excurssion and going to live in Canada, and you are arrested because of him by the police in your country and breaking all your life making of you mad and dammaged person who is already death even still existing with your body? That happened with my friend here.
So many stories I can tell you about the life here!!!
Why so many people on West hate us the ordinary people and we are not guilty that we were born here and the politics devided the world into 2 parts and did not interested if we are agree?!!!!

Not necessarily. You feel less safe today because of media propaganda. Your fear is being banked on by unscrupulous politicians.
