I bought from ebay an old laptop which runs on windows 2000 (no CD). How do I reformat the entire harddisk and install windows 98? I only have an original windows 98 CD.

ok thats an easy fix.... go to the link below. download a boot disk and just follow the instructions. Since you have 2k already on the hdd, you will have to start with floppy and fdisk commands , SO I included the link that explains this completely as well. If you simply install 98 wth 2k? you will have partition issues, but below is a step by step to get a clean fresh 98 install and to not start out with problems from the get go...its That Easy... Cheers~

I wouldn't recommend downgrading the computer, but if you must then take note of your hardware drivers. Windows 98 & 98SE are not very good at recognising hardware devices. If you have an original 98 CD you should be able to boot from it and reformat the hard drive. Or you can download a boot disk from here....

The laptop manufactures website may have the drivers available for your machine, if you run in to any trouble.

If the laptop has a floppy drive, use fdisk to format the hard drive, then install 98 normally. But, find all required drivers first. This method is not recommended.

Instead, call the laptop manufacturer and see if the Windows 2000 Recovery CD is available. You will have far fewer headaches.

ken why do u wana go for out dated windows o/s??, let win 2000 be the o/s, even win 2000 is not compatable with most new program, so better go for windows xp or vista if u really planed or a change of o/s cos when u keep changing ur operating system ur hard drive may crash, so better upgrade it,
