Hey!

You need to talk directly to the modem using AT command set and query it as
to how it is set up and what it is doing. Use a terminal program like
Hyperterminal (should be on your computer). Type ATZ Type AT and
modem should respond OK. If you don't see anything, then type ATE1 .. then
AT .. then you should see OK if the modem is hooked up correctly.

Then type ATDT and the phone number of your ISP and see if the modem dials
out. If it does, then the modem is fine and you have something mucked up in
your XP settings for the modem. If the modem doesn't respond to any of the
above, then maybe something is wrong with it or the socket.

hope this will help!

Cheers:)

Is the modem provided by your ISP, internet service provider? If it is then it probably isn't the modem. If it is yours then it probably has some settings on the modem to allow only your PC to connect, but thats only a guess. Its hard to know what the problem is without exploring a bit to see what the entire configuration is.

You might want to try booting your laptop AFTER you plug it into your modem.

You can also try clicking on Start>click run>type in "cmd">click ok>a new window opens
type in "ipconfig /release" NOTICE: there is a space between the 'g' and the '/'
hit enter
You should see a lot of zeros.
type in "ipconfig /renew" NOTICE: there is a space again
hit enter

Now try opening your web browser. It is one of the simpler things to do so it is worth a try.

Another thing you could do that is very similar. Force your Laptop IP address, subnet mask, and gateway to be almost the same as your PC. On your PC click Start>click run>type "cmd">hit enter>new window>type "ipconfig>hit enter
write down the information that you see or keep the window open so you can copy them to your Laptop. On the Laptop Click Start>click run>type "cmd">hit enter>new window>type "ncpa.cpl">hit enter
A new window opens. Right click on Local Internet Connection>click properties>another window>scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on it to select>click properties>new window>click on "use the following IP address">the shaded boxes can now be changed. Type in exactly everything from your PC except for the IP address! It should differ only slightly for example.
PC IP address------------>192.168.1. 3
Laptop IP address------->192.168.1. 4
After all changes, click ok or close on all windows and try your browser again, with the laptop connected of course. If it works then keep the settings. If not then go back and select "obtain IP address automatically" so you can continue troubleshooting.

Also, it may be your laptop is not getting served by the DNS server or passed from your modem to the laptop. Open your web browser and type in 69.147.114.210 then hit enter or click go. This is yahoo's address. If yahoo loads up then that is your problem. If not then continue other troubleshooting.

You need to modify your network settings - this depends on what operating system you use. I assume you are using xp..
Go into start > Control panel > Network connections > then go to create new connection and follow the connection wizard. Test it; if it works you can delete your old network connection.

Hope this helps

Are you saying that you have an external modem and when you disconnect it by pulling the cable out that you cannot access a webpage?

Am I missing something?
