Consumer exploitation:
Over 26 crore of the total Indian population earned below Rs 45 daily and they were deprived of the basic necessities of life such as clean water, minimum nutrition and basic healthcare. Over 1,600 crore of the tax payers’ money was spent on the distribution of foodgrain through the PDS yet starvation deaths and malnutrition had been reported from among 25 per cent of the our population.
“India is a signatory to a pledge — the millennium development Goals(MDGs) to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, he said. The consumer organisations would now work as watchdogs to monitor the progress and publish the evaluation through public report to share the results on poverty, he asserted.
The “war against poverty” by consumer organisations would focus on the protection of the lives of children and women. The recent controversy on pesticides in bottled water and lack of minerals and vitamins in the diet of the poor are some issues concerning public health, he added.
The Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 was a perfect example of how the government made laws but was unable to implement them. There is a direct link between poverty and tabacco as over 2000 persons died in India every year due to tabacco-related diseases, he added.
Now a days consumers are easily cheated by traders and sellers consumers consciousness towards their rights and the social legal obligations of the business and the government is very poor . The government enacted a consumer protection act in 1986. But there is no awareness among our citizens . To take measures or precautions to the people. Few awareness programmes to be held in rural areas if so these are followed by our government and also if the rights are followed by people these major problems will be solved slowly.
I feel consumers fall prey to aggressive advertisements done by some ad agencies like jump from top of a hill etc . although a notice of caution preceeds such ads viewers seldom read this caution as it is flashed for few seconds. It is with this kind of ads that defective goods are introduced in market. There is other side consumer should discourage these kind of customer exploitation which also include sale of goods that have expired expiry data and these case should be filed in consumer court for which every indian consumer should be knowledgeable of their right.

In a free market, it's impossible, as all exchanges are voluntary.
Think: just as nobody forces you to listen to Imus, no one forces you to buy cigarettes. If you don't want to, you don't have to.
