10% is Vat
so price+ VAT= price+ (price10/100) = 39$
110/100 price= 39
then price is 3900/110 =34.54
Vat is 10% of it
then 34.54 10/100= 3.45$ is VAT

its not very difficult actually..

look, $39 is the cost of the cd plus vat.
originally the price of the cd is $y (100%) and vat is 10%
so , you can say that $39 is 110%.

$39 = original price + vat
$39 = 100% + 10%
$39 = 110%
$39 / 110 = 110% / 110
$39/110 = 1%
($39/110) x 10 = 1% x 10
$39/11 = 10%
$3.5454 = the vat!

hope you can understand...

well, it's kinda clear that you guessed the first question.

I've got a of ways I'd like you to try.

So, 3 is 10% of the original amount of $30
3/33 = 1/11
which means, the VAT is 1 part out of 11
So, 1/11*39 = 39/11 = 3.5454...

If the VAT = 10% 10% of $39.00 = $3.90 = VAT

(39.00 times 00.10 = 3.90)

$39.00 - $3.90 = $35.10 (the cost of the CD before VAT)

I use T for total price, P for selling price, and t for tax.
Then
T = P + t
but t = 0.1P
so P = t/0.1
T = t/0.1 + t
T = t(1/0.1 + 1)
T = t(1 + 0.1)/0.1
t = 0.1T/1.1
for T = $39
t = 0.1*39/1.1
t = $3.55
