Central Processing Unit.

CPU (central processing unit) is an older term for processor and microprocessor, the central unit in a computer containing the logic circuitry that performs the instructions of a computer's programs.
---------------------------------
Abbreviation of central processing unit, and pronounced as separate letters. The CPU is the brains of the computer. Sometimes referred to simply as the processor or central processor, the CPU is where most calculations take place. In terms of computing power, the CPU is the most important element of a computer system.
On large machines, CPUs require one or more printed circuit boards. On personal computers and small workstations, the CPU is housed in a single chip called a microprocessor.

Two typical components of a CPU are:

The arithmetic logic unit (ALU), which performs arithmetic and logical operations.
The control unit (CU), which extracts instructions from memory and decodes and executes them, calling on the ALU when necessary.

The CPU i.e.,the Central Processing Unit is also known as the brain of the computer.CPU or sometimes simply processor, is the component in a digital computer that interprets computer program instructions and processes data. CPUs provide the fundamental digital computer trait of programmability, and are one of the necessary components found in computers of any era, along with primary storage and input/output facilities. A CPU that is manufactured as a single integrated circuit is usually known as a microprocessor. Beginning in the mid-1970s, microprocessors of ever-increasing complexity and power gradually supplanted other designs, and today the term "CPU" is usually applied to some type of microprocessor.

The phrase "central processing unit" is a description of a certain class of logic machines that can execute computer programs. This broad definition can easily be applied to many early computers that existed long before the term "CPU" ever came into widespread usage. However, the term itself and its initialism have been in use in the computer industry at least since the early 1960s (Weik 1961). The form, design and implementation of CPUs have changed dramatically since the earliest examples, but their fundamental operation has remained much the same.

Early CPUs were custom-designed as a part of a larger, usually one-of-a-kind, computer. However, this costly method of designing custom CPUs for a particular application has largely given way to the development of mass-produced processors that are suited for one or many purposes. This standardization trend generally began in the era of discrete transistor mainframes and minicomputers and has rapidly accelerated with the popularization of the integrated circuit (IC). The IC has allowed increasingly complex CPUs to be designed and manufactured in very small spaces (on the order of millimeters). Both the miniaturization and standardization of CPUs have increased the presence of these digital devices in modern life far beyond the limited application of dedicated computing machines. Modern microprocessors appear in everything from automobiles to cell phones to children's toys.

CPU is Central Processing Unit. Pretty much the brains of a computer.

CPU
I do not believe it is the processor

the CPU shields the most crucial parts of the computer
while being shielded itself in some sort of plastic
usually many CPU covers have glass slides and neon lighting! ahaha most people like to pimp there units ^^

I kinda lost myself there

the things inside the CPU ok

Motherboard:basically the most important
it holds the processor and the internal fan
many wires come from here to other parts
a part of the motherboard is exposed outside at the back of the CPU

Hardrive: the hardrive or hdd for short is basically your memory card

Video card: is attached to the motherboard, having high rate video card will mean that you can view high graphics

Memory: this is somehow different from the hdd, having high memory will allow you to open alot of programs onscreen without wearing itself out, it also speeds up your computer

Internal Fan: helps cool the inside of the cpu.

Powerbox: this is the internal power box wires from here are the ones you plug into your AVR/sockets

that's about it

in short it carries all the parts ^^

Central Processing Unit. Your processor. The chip in your computer that is the "brain", made by Intel or AMD these days.

It is *not* the big beige box that many people call their CPU.
